Hundreds of men, women and children died in Dhaka, Bangladesh, last week after a block housing five garment factories collapsed on top of them. The death toll is still rising yet the worst industrial disaster in the country s history didn t even make the lead story on most news bulletins here.
The likes of Primark didn t directly cause those deaths but they do have a MORAL responsibility to make sure that the products they re selling are made in places with safe and decent working conditions.
These deaths were preventable and there s plenty they COULD have done like sign up for the Bangladesh Fire and Building Safety Agreement. It provides independent safety inspections of every factory used by a supplier.
We should all be asking questions about why that T-shirt only costs 5.
Just as we demand to know what s in our food and where it comes from, so we should demand to know who makes our clothes and what conditions they are working in because let s face it, today some of us WILL be wearing current events in the world 2011 clothes made by those who died in Dhaka.
