The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, through a press release, condemned today (31/1) death of a journalist in Somalia in the last 29 days and asked for measures to increase the safety of media professionals in the country Horn of Africa.
Bokova called for investigations jazeera arabic into the killer Osmam Abdi and declared that "the death of journalists undermines people's right of access to information and freedom of expression. The Somali reconciliation will only be possible with respect to these two rights. "
Since 2006 UNESCO maintains the portal "for UNESCO Memory of Murdered Journalists", which reports the death of 21 Somali journalists. Last year, UNESCO has provided jazeera arabic equipment and training on safety, journalism "conflict sensitive" and information about humanitarian aid to 40 media professionals in Somalia. The training aimed to strengthen the quality and flow of information to audiences within Somalia and refugee camps in neighboring countries.
